단순히 불편을 약간 참고 간다는 생각. 어 그런건가 하는 생각. 그렇게만 생각하면 이런 거대한 시스템 돌아가는 길을 알 수가 없다. 도대체 관료들과 일반 시민들을 연결해 주는 장치는, 이렇게 우석훈 등에게만 맡겨 놓을 일인가? 조선, 한겨레는 왜 이런 얘기가 없을까.
According to a new research note from J.P. Morgan’s Mark Moskowitz summarized by AppleInsider, Apple is unsurprisingly working on prototypes for the iPad 3, but should be in “no rush” to release the device as competitors have yet to put forward compelling alternative devices.
Analyst Mark Moskowitz with J.P. Morgan revealed on Friday that his conversations with industry insiders have revealed that Apple’s next iPad will not be available until sometime in 2012, even as prototypes for the device begin to circle in the supply chain.
“In our view, Apple should be in no rush,” he said. “The other tablet entrants have stumbled so far, and that trend-line could persist deep into 2012.”
Moskowitz’s report comes as yet another competing tablet exhibits poor marketplace performance, with Research in Motion reporting (PDF) yesterday that it shipped only 200,000 PlayBook tablets during its second fiscal quarter of 2012 that ended on August 27th. It is unknown how many of those shipments translated into sales to end users. In contrast, Apple shipped 9.25 million iPads during its most recently completed quarter.
Apple had been rumored to be trying to launch the iPad 3 sometime near the end of this year, but has now reportedly settled on an early 2012 debut. Some reports have claimed that technological difficulties with building a Retina display for the iPad 3 forced Apple to cancel any plans of a 2011 release for the device.Continued word of a 2012 release for the iPad 3 comes as TiPb notes that Target is listing at least some of the current iPad 2 models as “discontinued” in its internal store inventory systems. Such stock systems can be unreliable indicators, however, and thus it is not believed to be suggestive of an imminent iPad 3 launch. The reason for the change in status does, however, remain unknown.

진정 애플의 선전이, 전략이 놀랍다. 경쟁사는 알아서 이렇게 스스로 주저앉고 혹은 일본, 독일, 네덜란드 여기저기서 애플은 특허 소송을 터뜨린다. 2007년 스티브 잡스가 아이폰을 발표하면서 특허를 걸었다고 농을 치는데, 개발자들이 막 웃었다. 그런데 그게 단순한 농이 아니었다. 보라, 5년 전부터, 아니 아이폰 개발(이 언제 시작됐는지 정확치 않지만)을 할 때부터 다 고려했던 것이다.
여기서 짤막한 소개 하나. 미국 변호사하겠다고 껍죽대다가 잠깐 한국에 있을 때 얘기다. 한국의 빌 게이츠라는 사람(마음의 표현은 작자)을 만났다. 거물이어서 대략 기대를 갖고 만났고, 실컷 그 쪽 얘기만 듣다가 주선한 후배가 자리를 비운 사이 물어봤다.
“그럼 최신 기술의 전장에서 변호사들 역할이 뭐가 있을까요?”
큰 기대, 했다. 아니 실제로 그 사람(작자)이 경험하지 못 했더라도 주워듣고 아는 바가 많으리라 생각했다. 돌아온 답은…
“아니, 우리 먹고 살 것도 없는데(그런 자리가 어디 있어요?)” — 대략 이 정도…
굉장히 실망했다. 변호사 일자리가 없어서? 아니. 이 거물의 입에서 저 정도 인식을 실제 경험한 사실이. 위 애플의 개발 단계에서 법적 검토는, 순전히 내 상상이지만, 없을 일이 아니다. 실제로, 분명 있었다. 강한 추정, 확신, 당연하지 않은가?

꼭 삼성 대 애플로만 보지 않아도 구구절절 옳은 말씀. 전체적인 그림에 대한 이해와 진단, 평가는 필자 생각과 다르다쳐도 삼성이 소프트웨어를 ‘외주’로 보고 인도로 돌린다는 것은 참 시의적절한 지적질.

재작년 아이폰 한국 발매, 이후 SNS 사용자 폭발 증가 등, 우리만, 몇몇만이 좋아하며 공유하고 사용하던 환경이 이제는 확실히 대중화되었다. 그것도 빠르게. 앱 스토어에는 아직 부족하나마 많은 ‘전향’ 개발자들의 작품이 보이고 있다.
자 그러면 음악은? 책은? 음악은 그나마 벅스와 멜론, 도시락 등이 선전하고 아이팟, 아이폰에 부응하는 서비스로 거듭나고 있지만, 실제로 얼마나 그들의 DNA가 바뀌었는지, 그건 여전히 의문이다.

아마존이 킨들 세 번째 버전에 이어 올 가을, 혹은 겨울에 칼라 킨들을 낸다고 한다. 안드로이드 기반으로, 하지만 안드로이드 색깔은 빼고 오로지 ‘킨들’로 보일 기기를 선 보인다고 한다. 부럽다.
정부가 OS 만든다고 설레발 칠 때가 아니다. 음, 요즘 대세는 애플 키노트인데, 정부 ppt는 아직도 .ppt?
While I would be absolutely thrilled to indulge my Pokemon addiction on my smartphone (officially, anyway), Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has gone and shot down my dreams. According to a post-press conference interview with Nikkei, Iwata has categorically denied that Nintendo will create games for platforms other than their own.
“This is absolutely not under consideration. If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo. Having a hardware development team in-house is a major strength. It’s the duty of management to make use of those strengths.”
Though Iwata does admit that creating a division to churn out smartphone games would lead to some short-term gains, he states that his job is about maintaining Nintendo’s position down the line. It’s a fair point to make — Nintendo has spent decades cultivating some of the most beloved gaming brands in the world, and to start releasing iOS and Android spin-offs that don’t live up to the standard could jeopardize those years of effort.
Even so, one can’t help wonder if Iwata is being a tad short-sighted. The company’s latest handheld effort has been a bit of a flop, with the company even tacitly admitting faults in the 3DS’s design by rolling out a heinous new cradle for it. Nintendo took a risk on 3D, and to date, it simply hasn’t been working out for them. Would Nintendo really be risking that much if they went the smartphone route? It could be a secondary focus for them: get a talented group of people to make, for example, the best mobile version of Zelda they can and push it out right before Skyward Sword hits. Deliver a solid enough experience, and fans will eat both games up.
Of course, it’s easy for me to say all this from the outside. Iwata (and Nintendo by proxy) would be the ones to deal with the aftermath, and for them, it just may not seem worth it yet.
